以前の投稿でも何回かまとめている通り, 生成文法では, 言語能力に対しての記述だけではなく, 説明を試みている. その試みを端的に示すチョムスキーの文章を引用してみよう.

The long-term goal of theoretical inquiry is explanation, not a trivial concept. I’ll try to clarify as we proceed.

We should distinguish explanation from description. Descriptive inquiries seek to show that this is the way things are. Explanation goes far beyond: It seeks to show why things are this way and not some other way. It is a much more ambitious endeavor, but it is the goal to keep in mind.

以前の投稿でも言及した“Why this, and not that?”と同じような表現が使われているが, 「なぜこの形であり, なぜあの形ではないのか」という問いを考えることは, 非常に野心的なものではあるが, 我々が常に心の内に抱えておかなければならないものである.
