科学の成すこと
以前の投稿で，科学的な営みの本質は何かという問いに対して Chomsky (2021)，Weyl (1934)の一節を学んだことをまとめた. 今回，Bode (2024)も（元はChomskyの一説だと思うが）同様のことをBode流にまとめていたので引用したい. Bodeの方がより言語に焦点を当てた書き方をしている.
The task of science is to mediate between what is visible and complex and what is invisible and simple. Human language is a phenomenon observable in the natural world. As such it is a natural object of investigation.

我々の言語現象は，現実の自然の世界で観測が可能な現象である. 理論言語学は，その裏側にあるメカニズムを探求するのが仕事である. 他方，裏側にあるメカニズムは，実際にある言語現象を通してしか確認できないことに常に注意を払っていなければならない点であろう.
