人間の特殊能力

人間の言語能力は非常に不思議なもので, 我々はこの世界に存在しないものや概念的にはありえないはずの存在も表現することが可能である. Bode (2024) はこの点を様々な例文を用いて表現している.

By means of unbounded combination of symbols (recursive set-formation, MERGE) humans can express ideas or things that do not exist in the external world and even point to objects or events that are conceptually impossible as illustrated in (1). Importantly this is a property of human language that applies to any particular language.

そしてこれらを可能にしているのが, 生成文法で想定されている Merge という能力である. この結合の操作がこういった特別な表現を可能にしていると言えるであろう.
