言語的多元主義

時折, 言語はまとまっている方が便利だと考える人々もいる.

例えば, 素朴に「世界中が英語だけになれば便利なのに」と考えるような学生に会ったこともある. しかし, 世の中には様々な言語が存在しているし, 複数の言語が存在するというのは非常に重要なことである. Baker (2008) は言語を「目」に例えながら, 言語の多様性は世界を三次元 (立体) 的に捉えるために利用できると論じている.

From this perspective, the benefits of linguistic pluralism can be compared to the benefits of having a plurality of eyes. … The view from the two eyes is not very different in objective terms. Nevertheless, there is great value in having two eyes… The reason is that when your neural circuitry compares the two views, sight takes on a new quality: The world becomes three-dimensional. As a society we can expect to use linguistic diversity in the same way.

英語と日本語など「違う複数の視点」をすり合わせることで, 人類は世界をより立体的で豊かに捉えることができる.

もし言語が一つしかなければ, 世界は平面的であるかもしれない. もちろん言語学習などは様々な苦労が伴うものではあるが, 実際にやってみると新たなことが学べ, 楽しいものである.
