我々はよく, 言葉を短くして表現する. しかし, その短くする方法にも様々なものがあり, 我々が普段何気なく使っている言葉も, 実は異なる分類を行う時がある. Carstairs-McCarthy (2017) はいくつか例を挙げながら, この異なる分類, 細かく言えばアクロニムとアブリビエーションの違いを説明している.

Blends made up of initial letters are known as acronyms, of which well-known examples are NATO … The use of capital letters in the spelling of some of these words reflects the fact that speakers are aware of their acronym status. It does not follow that any string of capital letters represents an acronym. If the conventional way of reading the string is by pronouncing the name of each letter in turn, as with USA and RP … then it is not an acronym but an abbreviation.

「NATO（ナトー）」のように一つの単語として発音できるものが「アクロニム」であり, 「USA（ユー・エス・エー）」のようにアルファベット読みするものは「アブリビエーション」である. 確かに, USAのことを「ウサ」とは読まないし, NATOのことを「エヌエーティーオー」とは読まないであろう. これもまた英語の非母語話者からすると, 言われれば気づく点であるが, 言われないとなかなか気づかない点でもある.
