漸進的か, 跳躍的か
進化言語学の文脈において, 言語能力の発達がどのように起きたかというトピックは非常に重要であることは以前の投稿でも度々まとめている.
今回はClark (2013)の一節から, その観点を改めてまとめてみたいと思う.
The incremental view claims that the evolution of syntax involved multiple intermediate stages between the communication system of our last common ancestor with chimpanzees and full-blown modern human syntax. The saltational view claims that syntax was the result of just a single evolutionary development.

統語論の進化には, 複数の中間段階が含まれていたか, 単一の進化的発達の結果なのか, この問いは理論構築を根本的に変えるほどの非常に重要な問いであるし, それを踏まえるとそもそも言語がどういった用途で用いられるのかという根幹の問いにも繋がっていく. とても面白い問いである.
