コードに依存するコミュニケーション


言語の本質的な目的が未だ議論の途上であることは別として, 言語がコミュニケーションに使われているということ自体は自明の事実である.

そして, そのコミュニケーションを考えてみたとき, コミュニケーション自体にもいくつか, 根本的かつ質的な区別が存在するのかもしれない.

次の引用文を見てみたい.

In particular, Scott-Phillips defends a fundamental and qualitative distinction between communication that depends on codes (for example, the famous vervet warning call system: more on codes in ‘Codes and the Sender–Receiver framework’ section), and communication that depends on overtly assisted interpretation; that is, on communication that depends on an interpreter recognising that a sender is attempting to communicate, and using that recognition, together with common ground and general contextual information, to work out what the speaker intends to communicate.

この一節は, コードに依存するコミュニケーションと解釈に依存するコミュニケーションの間では, 明確な区別があることを主張している. つまり, これはさらに大きく捉えれば, 人間のコミュニケーション方法と動物のコードの差は, 例えば人間の方が表現できる語彙が多いなどといった量的な問題ではない.

人間のコミュニケーション方法では「この内容は私に向けられた伝達である」という認識や, その周囲のコンテクストを利用した推論が含まれ, これは質的な差として根本的に違うものと捉えられている. このようにコミュニケーション自体にも, 人間と他の動物において異なるものがあるのかもしれない.
