It distinguishes two roles in typical human communication. One is the management of audience attention by the speaker. The other is the flow of information or instruction from speaker to audience. In developing an incremental picture of the emergence of ostensive inferential communication, I shall retain this distinction between attention management and information flow, but suggest that in earlier hominins these roles were occupied by simpler cognitive mechanisms than those identified in typical analyses of contemporary ostensive inferential communication.
(Sterelny, 2017, p. 822)
