有限のリソースから無限の文へ
以前の投稿でもたびたび触れているが, 人間の言語は有限のものから無限の表現を可能にする生成システムであると考えられる.
今回それに対して, 当然のことではあるが, 記憶というリソースの制限を改めて明記しているチョムスキーの一文を引用したい.
Your knowledge of language is infinite, but your memory is finite. Your knowledge of language therefore can’t be just a list of memorized sentences. A central component of any theory of language, then, involves generating an infinity of sentences with finite resources.
(Chomsky et al., 2023, p. 2)
言語知識とは単に暗記された文章の羅列ではない. これはある意味で当然であるが, 非常に重要な観点である. おそらく言語学をやっている人間ならば, この点にはしっくりくると思うが, 普段一般的に言語を使っている人からすれば, 改めて言われてみると目から鱗の内容ではないだろうか.
