都市伝説と実際
非常に有名な言語に関する都市伝説として, エスキモーもしくはイヌイットの人々は, 彼らが話す言語の中で「雪」を表す単語をたくさん持っているというものがある. これは, 彼らが雪の中で生活しているから自然とその単語が増えるのだという, 一見非常に面白く, かつトリビア心をくすぐられる知識であるがゆえに, 様々なところでこの言説を見かけることがある.
しかし, これは真実ではない. Baker (2008) は, この内容に触れ, エスキモーよりもスキーヤーの方が雪を表す単語を多く持っているとまとめている.
Arguably the most famous myth about language is that the Eskimos have more than thirty different words for snow. This sounds like a clear case of the adaptation of language to distinctive properties of the environment. The myth is not true, however. The Eskimos in fact have fewer words for snow than the average skier.

これもまた非常に面白い観点であり, なおかつスキーヤーと比較していくところが非常に興味深い.
