言葉の中には「複合語」と呼ばれるものがある. 例えば, 黒板というのは簡単にまとめると「黒い+板」であり, 最終的には「板」の一種である. このように, 多くの単語は「α＋β」のような形で2つの語彙が1つの単語として扱われる. なおかつ, その特性はαかβどちらかの形質を基本的には受け継ぐ.

他方, 「α＋β」から複合語を作っても, その形質はα・β以外の要素から受け継ぐものもある. Carstairs-McCarthy (2017) を見てみよう.

However, whereas a greenstone is a kind of stone and a blackboard is a kind of board, a faintheart is not a kind of heart but a kind of person someone who has a faint heart, metaphorically. So, although heart is a noun, it is not appropriate to call heart the head of the compound. Rather, faintheart is headless, in the sense that its status as a noun is not determined by either of its two components. (Carstairs-McCarthy, 2017, p. 64)

faintheart（臆病者）は心臓（heart）の一種ではなく, 比喩的に弱い心臓を持った「人」の一種である. つまりこれは, faintというα, heartというβが1単語となるが, αβ以外の要素が主要部となって語を形成する.
