人間は他の動物と根本的に異なる思考能力を有している. 他の動物を見ていても, 簡易的な思考, 例えば危険な捕食者がいれば, 逃げるといった行動は観察されることがある. 他方で, 我々人間のような数学的な思考などは観察されることがない. この点において, Bode (2024) はこれらの違いというのは, 人間独自の新しいシステムであるSyntaxが新たに追加されたことによるものであると述べている.
For language a further system has to be added: SYN. The most deeply embedded, the newest system is uniquely human. It inserts the capacity for infinite structure-building (by means of recursive Merge). When UG-atoms, which are abstract and discrete by na-ture (categories and roots), enter structure-building so that set-formation by internal andexternal application of Merge forms hierarchical structures, mind-dependent meaning and complex thought come into play that may get externalized.

これらが, いわゆる複雑な思考を可能にしたという主張は, やはり言語能力自体が他の動物との特異性を際立たせているといえるだろう.
