数学的システムとMerge

Mergeの役割

生成文法, その中でもミニマリスト・プログラムの中核となる概念は, 長年Mergeであったという点に関しては, 以前の投稿でたびたび触れている. 今回はその中でも, より数的なシステムにフォーカスしたHiraiwa (2017) の論文を見てみたい.

“It is Merge that integrates the two pre-existing core systems of number (simplex numerals and numerical bases, respectively) and generates an open-ended list of hierarchically structured complex numerals by combining simplex numerals and numerical bases.”

(Hiraiwa, 2017, p. 4)

際限のない (無限の) リストを生成するのは, まさにMerge (併合) という操作であるという提案は, このMergeが人間のみが無限を操ることができる存在になった核であるという発想をもたらすことができる. Mergeというのは言語能力だけでなく, 数の体系をも構築するより広範で強力な能力であったことを示唆している.
