構造依存性と内在的な言語
以前の投稿でもたびたび,人間の言語の特徴について言及してきた.その中の一つが「構造依存性」である.我々人間の言語は,線形的な順序に並んだ単語ではなく,階層的な構造に対して意味を依存させている.これを「構造依存性」と呼んでいる.
この構造依存性は,その特徴からもわかるとおり,普段耳にしている言語活動とは違う「計算」が行われていると考えられる.なぜならば,普段耳にしている発話などは線形的な順序で入力を受ける他方,その処理が線形的な順序に依存しないということは,入力のフォーマットとは別の問題であると考えられるからだ.今回は,このことをまとめた Chomsky の一節を引用する.
The observations generalize: structure-dependence holds of all constructions in all I-languages. This means that from infancy and on through life, we reflexively ignore 100% of what we hear, words in linear order, and attend only to what we never hear: abstract structures generated by the mind and operations on these structures. Furthermore, experimental work has shown that the principle is known to children as early as they can be tested, two years-old or less. Note that this curious property is restricted to I-language, generation of thought. The principle doesn’t hold for externalization. The only plausible conclusion is that I-language and externalization are distinct systems.

Chomsky は,実験的研究によっても,構造依存性という奇妙な性質が I 言語,すなわち思考の生成に限定されていることを述べている.このことから,I 言語(内在的な言語)と外在化は,それぞれ異なる別個のシステムであると考えることができる.
