人間と水仙

人間とチンパンジーは, ほとんど遺伝子が同じであるという話をよく耳にする. これはある種, 一つのトリビアとして世俗的にも広く伝わっている内容である. 他方で, より興味深い文言を述べている一節がある. McMahon and McMahon (2012) から次の内容を引用したい.

In fact, Marks (2002: 28) estimates that at the DNA level, humans and daffodils are about 35 per cent identical. Revising our viewpoint radically, we should probably work up a degree of gratitude that the most recent trees of life allow animals still to constitute a different branch from plants at all.

daffodils, 日本では「水仙」として知られる花であるが, この花のDNAは人間のDNAと35%ほど同一であると推定されているらしい. 筆者はこれを初めて知ったが, 非常に興味深い数値であると感じる.

なおかつ, 非常に面白いのが, 著者のコメントである. 「動物が植物とは別の枝として独立を許されていることに, 感謝の念を抱くべき」というのは, 非常にユニークな視点である.
