言語系統の樹形図の注意点

「平行発達」と「接触」

歴史言語学などを見ていると, よく言語系統を示す樹形図を見ることがある. これは非常にわかりやすく言語の変化を示してくれる. その一方で, McMahon & McMahon (2012) は樹形図は言語間の類似の原因を一つしか表示できないという点を鋭く指摘している.

A tree, by its nature, can display only one cause of similarity between languages, namely the features they retain (albeit sometimes in a changed form) from their common ancestors. There are, however, at least two other major reasons for resem-blances between languages, and these are homoplasy, or independent, common, parallel development, and contact.

確かに言語は内面的な変化だけではなく, 外面上の変化や言語外の要因によって類似性を持つことも多くある. この点に留意しておくことは非常に重要である.
