言語の起源と隔離実験

隔離すれば神の言葉を話すのか.

人類の最初の言語は何であったのか.

これは非常に興味深い問いである. (ただし, 科学的かどうかは別として) おそらくタイムマシンでもできない限り, この最初の言語が何であったのかを特定する術は存在しないが, 過去にもこれと同一の意識を持っていた人々は, 実験を行っていたらしい.

Pharaoh Psamtik, or Psametticus I (663–610 BC), for instance, left two small children to be brought up by a shepherd, who was permitted to feed them but not talk to them, and who was to report to the Pharaoh on what language they had learned. … After about two years, the shepherd reported to the Pharaoh that they had approached him with hands outstretched, saying becos, which on investigation turned out to be the Phrygian word for ‘bread’.

端的に言えば, 生まれた赤ん坊を隔離し, 食べ物などを与えるものの, 言語に一切触れないまま育てるという実験である. そしてその実験の結果として, 赤ん坊は「ベコス」というフリュギア語でパンを意味する単語を話したという.

他方「ベコス」という音自体は, 偶発的に発話されるのに十分確率の高い言葉であり, とても科学的とは言えないであろう.
