日本で教育を受けた人々ならば, 中学や高校で英語を習う際に, 動詞や名詞の形が変わるという観点で, 例えば不規則動詞を懸命に書いて覚えた人なども多いだろう. あの当時は覚えるのが非常に大変で, 私などは「英語はなんて面倒くさい言語なんだろう」と思いながら練習していたのを覚えている.
他方で, だからといって英語は活用が難しい言語だと一口に言うのは、難しい場合もある. Carstairs-McCarthy (2017)の次の内容を見てみたい.
In English, as we have seen, the number of word forms for any given lexeme is small. For verbs, the maximum is five (e.g. give, gives, grew, giving and given from GIVE) and for nouns the maximum is two (e.g. performance and performances from PERFORMANCE). … In contemporary Turkish, it has been estimated that every verb has about two million forms!

現代トルコ語では, すべての動詞が約200万もの形を持つと推測されている. とんでもない数である. そしてこのことが教えてくれるのは, いかに自分の母語や知っている言語だけの常識で, ものを語れないかということでもある. だからこそ我々は視野狭窄に陥らず, 幅広く言語を見ていくべき時もあるであろう.
