無接続詞接続と普遍性
等位構造の研究には, 様々な提案が出されてきていた.
その中でも一つ, 等位接続詞自体を主要部とするような分析もあったが, 今回はそうではなく, 無接続詞接続（Asyndetic Coordination）が一般的であるという次の主張を見てみたい.
Our analysis of coordination does not require insertion of a coordinator, at least not in principle. After all, the coordinator is not the head of the structure, and mutual adjunction is possible in its absence. Indeed, asyndetic coordination is common crosslinguistically and perhaps available universally (Payne 1985 and Haspelmath 2007).

この視点によれば, 等位接続は必ずしも等位接続詞の語彙挿入を必要としないことになる.
これは大きな理論的な分岐点になる. 等位接続詞を主要部とするかしないかで, 理論の立て方が根本的に異なるからである.
