ツリーであって,直線でない.
我々はしばしば進化というものに対して,線形のモデル,つまり過去から未来に向かって良くなっていくようなイメージを持ってしまうが,それは明確に誤りである.
次の節ではどのように捉えればいいのだろうか.次の節では,その内容を直線的な尺度ではなく,樹状図と捉えるのが正しいモデルであると主張している.
One of the core insights in evolutionary theory is that this way of thinking is fundamentally erroneous, in spite of its intuitive appeal. The basic facts of the matter were clearly recognized by Darwin: because of evolution, and descent with modification, the proper organizing conception of life is a tree, and not a linear scale.

これは非常に重要な点である.なぜならば,線形のモデルとして,例えばチンパンジーから原始的な人類,さらに現代的な人類のような直線を考えてしまうと,チンパンジーは現生人類より前のものと等しいような印象を受けてしまう.
しかし,実際には樹形図であるため,共通の祖先からチンパンジーと人間は並行して進化している.
これは例えば,チンパンジーにある能力が祖先にもあったとも,チンパンジーにない能力が祖先にもなかったとも言えないことになる.
