進化における3つの異なる時間軸

我々は普段簡単に「language evolution（言語進化）」という言葉を使ってしまうが, これは非常に総体的な言葉であり, より細かく分割して整理しておかないと議論がかみ合わないことが多々あるというのは, 以前の投稿でもたびたび触れている.

今回は, この言語進化に対して3つの異なる時間スケールに分割した次の一節を見てみたい.

When we talk of language evolution in the broadest sense, therefore, we are referring to evolution on three different timescales: the lifetime of an individual, a language and a species. What is particularly interesting about language, and why its emergence on earth can be seen as a major transition in evolution, is that there are interactions between all three of these systems. The structure of the learner is determined by the outcome of biological evolution. Similarly, the pressures on linguistic transmission are determined in part by the learner’s genetically given biases.

ここで述べられている3つのスケールとは, 個体の生涯というタイムスケール, 言語自体のタイムスケール, そしてその種のタイムスケールという, 3つの異なる時間軸である.

さらに, これら3つのスケールの間には相互作用があり, それによって様々な言語的特徴も生まれる可能性がある.

言語進化について考える際には, このように異なる軸での時間軸が同時に走っていることを念頭に置く必要があるだろう.
