進化は続いている.
人もまた進化のプロセスを通して, 類人猿から異なる形質を獲得し, 進化をしてきた生き物である. こう聞くと, ついつい我々は無意識のうちに, 進化というものが完了しているような印象を受けてしまうが, 実際そうではない. McMahon & McMahon (2012) は, これを親知らずを例に, 次のようにまとめている.
In fact, evolution is certainly still a continuing process, in our species as in others. Take, for example, wisdom teeth. As a species, humans seem to be losing them progressively: fewer of us have wisdom teeth now than in previous generations. It is possible that this might have some future impact on language… (p. 19)
親知らずがなくなっていけば, 将来の言語に影響を与えるかもしれない. これもまた非常に興味深い観点である.
また, 言語はそれ自体が進化する「進化の振る舞い」を見せるような, 文化進化的な側面もあり, その互いへの影響というのは非常に興味深い.
