進化と歴史
言語を進化上の観点から検討することと, 言語が進化すると述べることは, 全くもって別物である. 他方で, 言語が進化のような振る舞いを見せるという検討はある程度は妥当であり, つい安易に言語は進化すると述べてしまいたくなる気持ちもわかる. この内容に対してMcMahon & McMahon (2012) の警鐘を確認したい.
…we must constantly remind ourselves that we are dealing here with evolution as a metaphor … in our terms the rise of linguistic variants and their possible embedding in language systems through change are crucially historical rather than evolutionary processes, which therefore do not in fact involve any genetic mutation, variation or selection.
(McMahon & McMahon, 2012, p. 14).
進化のプロセスではなく, 歴史のプロセスである. これは非常に意識しておかなければならないポイントである. つい比喩に頼りながら考えていくと, 誤った科学的結論を招きかねない.
