According to B&C, the only persuasive evidence we have for the possession of language is human “symbolic behavior”—the production of personal ornaments, abstract and figurative art, music, and so on. They think that the first unambiguous signs of such behavior are very recent indeed; here they cite the shell beads and engraved pieces of ochre dated to ~80 kya from Blombos Cave in South Africa (d’Errico et al. 2005). Moreover, they do not see any precursor to our symbolic capacities before this time in the archeological record. Following archeologist Ian Tattersall, they see this as just another example of a more general tendency in human cognitive and technological evolution.
