予期していなかった豊かさと複雑性
生成文法は, その始めから言語に対する根源的な説明を理論化することを目的としていた. 他方で, その試みは今もなお継続中であり, まだ完全にその仕事を終えたとは言えない.
その理由の一つに, チョムスキー自身も述べているように, 言語には当初は予想されていなかった豊かさと複雑性があることが分かってきたことが挙げられる.
Recognition of the unsuspected richness and complexity of the phenomena of language created a tension between the goals of descriptive and explanatory adequacy. It was clear that to achieve explanatory adequacy, a theory of the initial state must allow only limited variation: particular languages must be largely known in advance of experience.

また, ここで書かれている通り, この予想外の出来事は, 記述的な妥当性と説明的な妥当性の間に緊張関係をもたらした.
明確に「unexpected」と書かれているように, これは当初の想定よりもかなり言語が豊かで複雑であったということの証左である.
