言語を研究する理由
理論言語学の中で一つの大きい指示対象となっている生成文法は, Noam Chomskyによって提案され, 以降, 彼が主導してきたと言っても過言ではない. そんなチョムスキーが, 自身が言語を研究する理由について述べた一節がある.
One reason for studying language — and for me personally the most compelling reason — is that it is tempting to regard language, in the traditional phrase, as “a mirror of mind.”

言語を心の鏡としてみなしたいという誘惑, これは非常に(本人も述べている通り)パーソナルな理由であるが, だからこそ主観性が表れていて, 非常に興味深い一節である.
