生成文法では, 普遍文法の形態を探求することが大きな研究目標の一つであると言えるが, それに対して最善の答えとは何であろうか. これは現在の生成文法の基本仮説であるSMTにもつながる内容になるが, 次の一節を見てみたい.
As for Why-questions, in particular why UG has this rather than some other form, the best answer would be that a sudden and very slight evolutionary event yielded Merge, and that the rest follows from natural law.
