人間と呼ぶ言語
Principles and Parametersの理論では, 共通の原理と変更可能なパラメータで言語を説明しようとする. これによって人間の言語は限定されたバリエーションのみを持つことになり, なおかつ無数の独立したルールを設定する必要はなくなった. だからこそ, 生成文法の根幹にあるユニバーサルグラマーという発想に近づくことになったが, これを踏まえてJenkins (2011) は, 言語に対して非常に興味深い表現をしている.
Once all the choices have been made and all of the parameters have been fixed, the language has been determined. Thus, both the (near) universality of some features of language and the variation from language to language is accounted for at the same time. In fact, it has been said that under this view, there is really only one language in the world, called Human.

世界には本当は一つの言語しかなく, それを人間と呼ぶことも可能なのかもしれない. 我々が異なる言語と思っている日本語や英語, フランス語など個別言語の様々な違いは, 実は限定された仕方で異なる見た目を取るのだとすれば, それは本質的に一つの同じものだと言ってよいのかもしれない.
