フィボナッチパターンと第三要因


ミニマリスト・プログラムでは, 言語特有の要素を限りなく少なくした理論構築が目指されている.

その代わりに, 言語以外にも共通して存在する「第三要因」というものを仮定し, 言語の諸特性もまたその第三要因から導き出されるものとしている. チョムスキーはその第三要因に対して雪の結晶などの例を用いて説明しているが, 今回は別の例として, ひまわりに現れるフィボナッチパターンを取り扱った次の一節を見てみたい.

A reasonable hypothesis is that as yet unknown genes control the timing of the appearance of the primordia. Note that, under this scenario, there are no instructions laid down in the genes to specify the Fibonacci patterns. Rather the principles of dynamical systems guarantee that the patterns will appear, given certain assumptions about the forces acting on the primordia. Ian Stewart has called this a “partnership between genetics and physics.”

ひまわりには, 私も知らなかったのであるが, フィボナッチパターンが現れるらしい.

他方でこの一節では, そのパターンは遺伝子が描けと指示する必要はなく, 出現するタイミングの制御のみを提案している. あとは別の条件が満たされれば, 物理的な力などによって自発的にこのパターンが生じると考えている.

つまり, これを言語研究に置き換えて考えてみれば, 言語の諸特性を厳密に一対一で遺伝子に結びつける必要はなく, 遺伝子内にある要素が別のある条件を満たすと, 自然に今我々が観察している言語の諸特性が導き出せる可能性がある.
