パラメータの残滓
以前の投稿で, principles and parametersの時代には, いくつかの原理とパラメータによって言語の差異などを説明でき, なおかつ言語理論を非常にシンプルにすることが可能になるのを見た. その当時の研究傾向をまとめて述べている一文があるため, 今回はその部分を見てみたい.
What the work of recent years consistently shows is that, as soon as the domain is studied in detail and with appropriate theoretical tools, much of the variability dissolves and we are left with a residue of few elementary parameters.

多様性の多くは解消され, いくらかの基本的なパラメータが残る. これは言語理論にとってこの上ない進展であると言えるだろう.
なぜなら, 理論構築においては基本的にはシンプルな理論の方が好まれ, そのシンプルな理論で現状の問題を解決できるならば, それに越したことはないからである.
さらにこの傾向が強まっていけば, ミニマリスト・プログラムの方向に到達するのも非常に納得ができる.
