生成文法では, 「言語」というものの捉え方が日常で一般的に使われているそれと大きく異なるということを, 以前の投稿で度々触れている.

今回はそのことを「今日の天気」というもののレベルで論じている, 次の一節を見てみたい.

Enfield (2010) also puts forth a far-reaching thesis, quite standard today in the cognitive sciences, and a clear expression of the nonexistence thesis: “language is entirely grounded in a constellation of cognitive capacities that each—taken separately—has other functions as well.”Which means that language exists only in the sense that there is such a thing as today’s weather, a constellation of many factors that operate independently.

個人的に, これは非常にユーモラスな表現であると思う.

「今日の天気」というものは, 確かに様々な要因が組み合わさった結果に過ぎない. 他方, 言語というのも同じように, 様々な要因が組み合わさった総体として見なされる. 我々が「言語」と呼んでいるものは, 実は今日の天気と同じレベルのものというのは, 裏側を聞けば「なるほど」と膝を打つ部分もあるが, おそらくこれをそのまま伝えるだけでは, さらに混乱を招くような独特な表現である.
